Panelists Shared Insights on Trends Shaping the P-C Market
Carrier panelists discussed challenges and opportunities in the property-casualty (P-C) industry for personal lines and small and middle commercial markets at the SAN Annual Business Meeting and Conference at Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort.
Among the top trends is a greater push for vehicle telematics to rate risk more accurately, give clients more control over their premiums and encourage better fleet management.
“Telematics isn’t the future — it’s now,” said Christine Bartel, regional sales director, New England Region, Travelers. “It mitigates future rate increases, which can add to your retention.” With rising costs, telematics may be a solution for consumers looking to have more control over their auto insurance premiums. Bartel noted that some insureds are willing to be tracked with telematics if it means earning a discount. She said she is frequently asked by agents if her company is offering a better rate to a nearby agency.
“I can assure you, the rate is the rate, but that agent down the street quoted with telematics. So the agent who isn’t quoting, offering and educating [clients] about telematics is going to lose business,” said Bartel.
